If you’ve recently purchased vinyl plank flooring or are considering adding it to your Houston home, the following tips to keep your floors clean will ensure your installation always looks pristine!

1) Dirt prevention goes a long way

While it’s nearly impossible to keep your home looking spotless every single day, there are indeed a few steps you can take to decrease the chance of excessive dirt build-up. So, what can you do to keep your vinyl plank flooring from getting very dirty and looking super drab? Here are a couple of suggestions:

Doormats: Adding doormats to every entryway goes a very long way to limiting dirt and other outside particles from getting tracked in. Use it to shake or rub off any loose particles from shoes and boots before entering your house.

Ask Guests to remove their shoes: Although it may be second nature to you to remove your shoes once arriving at home, it might not be for your guests. Ask them to remove their shoes before entering. You can always keep an assortment of slippers for their use.

2) Sweep daily, or as often as possible

Ideally, sweeping should be done daily. However, if that's not possible, aim for every other day. The more you sweep, the less build-up you'll get on your vinyl plank flooring. Also, daily upkeep prolongs the lifespan of your floors.

3) Skip the wax – you don’t need it!

Nowadays, the more modern version of vinyl plank flooring doesn’t require wax. That’s to say, it’s not merely a suggestion that you do not use wax, but there’s a hard rule against doing so! That’s because using such products causes long-term build-up and can even cause your floors to become discolored.

4) Use felt furniture pads

It's best to use felt furniture pads, especially on particularly heavy items. Doing so helps prevent scratches, scrapes, and dents from occurring to your vinyl plank flooring.

5) Do not use steam!

If you’ve seen a steam mop advertisement lately, they make it sound like it’s the quickest way to clean floors. However, the high levels of steam and hot temperatures can do more harm than good. Even if you've installed a waterproof version, steam mops can still cause a lot of irreparable damage.
